What is lacquer
漆とは
漆とはウルシの木から採れる樹液のことである。
ウルシの木は、10年から15年かけて成長し、その樹液は 一本の木から
たった200mlしか採取できない。
人々は山でウルシの木を育て、その樹液を恵みとして生活に役立ててきた。人間と漆はその関係を果てしなく長い間、続けてきた。
Lacquer is the sap of the lacquer tree. The lacquer tree takes 10 to 15 years to grow and only 200 ml of sap can be extracted from each tree.
People have grown lacquer trees in the mountains and used their sap as a blessing in their lives. People and lacquer have continued this relationship since time immemorial.
奇跡のような漆の特性
漆は塗り、研ぎ、硬化を繰り返し何層も塗り重ねる。このプロセスを経てできあがった漆の塗膜はとても頑丈であり、化学的にも安定していて非常に耐久性が高い。
また漆は塗面を堅牢に保持する働きを持つ。日本では世界最古の漆が 9000年前の縄文時代の遺跡から分解されずに色鮮やかな状態で出てきている。これはもともと植物である漆が微生物によっても分解されないという性質を意味する。
想像をはるかに超える耐久性、断熱性、防腐性を備え、酸やアルカリ、 アルコールにも強く、抗菌、殺菌作用もあり、今も漆に勝る合成塗料は開発されていないという。さらに漆は接着剤としても優れており、今や国外でも注目が広がる 「金継ぎ」にも漆が使用されることから、その特性への関心は世界に広がっている。
漆を塗る意味
かつて漆器は、海外では”JAPAN”と呼ばれ、日本を代表する伝統工芸としてその名を馳せ、その技術と美しさと共に発展を遂げてきた。また漆は国宝や重要文化財の修復にも使用され、日本の歴史と芸術文化の継承にも大いに関わってきた。
しかし、漆文化が始まったとされる縄文時代は、漆は美しさや崇高さを表現する芸術品を彩るものではなく、漆の施しにより大切な物を維持し続けていこうというシンプルな思いが主だったはず。
日々、新しい物を生み出す現代。どの時代のどんな物も、それらは私たちの歴史であり、すべてに存在する理由と価値がある。しかし、実際は世界は行き場のない物に溢れ、それらが地球環境に負荷をかけ続けている。
デザインが古く時代に合わないもの、 傷や欠けなどで価値が低くなってしまったもの、 売場に辿り着けなかったもの、 捨てようにも捨てられずどこかにしまいこまれているもの、など。
そのような物へ漆を施すことによって得られるのは、外見の更新による生まれ変わりだけではない。貴重な木の樹液である漆により、前述した通りの耐久性、断熱性、防腐性により壮大な時間を生きる可能性を得る。また漆は時間の経過と共に塗面をさらに硬化させ、その色はより深みを増し、艶はさら輝きを増す。
Miraculous properties of lacquer
Lacquer is applied, sharpened and hardened repeatedly in layers. The lacquer coating produced by this process is very robust, chemically stable and extremely durable. Lacquer also helps to maintain the robustness of the coated surface. In Japan, the world's oldest lacquer has been found in a colourful state, undecomposed, at a Jomon-era site dating back 9,000 years. Lacquer, originally a plant, has the surprising property that it is not decomposed by micro-organisms. It is also resistant to acids, alkalis and alcohol, and has antibacterial and sterilising properties. Lacquer is also an excellent adhesive, and interest in its properties is spreading around the world, as lacquer is now used in kintsugi, a technique that is gaining attention outside Japan.
Meaning of lacquering
In the past, lacquerware was known overseas as "Japan" and was renowned as a traditional craft representing Japan, and has developed along with its techniques and beauty. Lacquer is also used to restore national treasures and important cultural assets, and has played an important role in the inheritance of Japanese history and artistic culture.
However, in the Jomon period, when the lacquer culture is said to have begun, lacquer was not used to decorate works of art expressing beauty and nobility, but mainly for the simple purpose of maintaining important objects by applying lacquer.
Today, we create new objects every day. No matter what objects from any era, they are our history, and all have a reason and value for existing. In reality, however, the world is overflowing with things that have nowhere else to go, and these things continue to put a burden on the global environment.
Old designs that are out of date, objects that have lost their value due to scratches and chips, objects that have never made it to the sales floor, and objects that cannot be thrown away but are stored away somewhere.
Applying lacquer to such objects not only gives them a new lease of life by renewing their appearance. Lacquer, which is the sap of a precious tree, gives the object the possibility to live for a magnificent period of time due to its durability, thermal insulation and antiseptic properties, as mentioned above. Lacquer also hardens the coated surface over time, deepening its colour and increasing its gloss.

漆を日常使いし、次世代に引き継ぐ。これこそが漆の本当の魅力であり、一万年前の縄文の人々から受け継いだ叡智であり、このプロジェクトの本意である。
漆の恩恵を知ることで、人々が再び自然と対話し、共に生きる方法について真に考えるきっかけに なることを願っている。
Use lacquer in everyday life and pass it on to the next generation. This is the real appeal of lacquer, the wisdom inherited from the Jomon people 10,000 years ago and this is the true intention of this project. It is hoped that the knowledge of the benefits of lacquer will encourage people to once again interact with nature and truly think about how to live together.
